The client wanted to only use their American English content. Doing this would be extremely limiting since each country, region, culture has its own personality and online style. The company in question sold training for executives and the training was all in English. We told the consultant that at least part of the site should be made country specific and that idea made the client shelve the plan, at least for now. Looking to work internationally you have to do some work that will match the target country. If nothign else, you have to figure out who will be looking for the training and make the pages something that they would like. From personal experience I know that I seldom search for my own training, I tell my assistant that I want training in a subject and have her find a couple options for me to choose from. If the home page was not in French - her native language - I am pretty sure that she would not consider putting it on the list of my options. Sublime Products - I think most small companies get stuck because of language barriers. But it really is a marketing question. If you already have a marketing strategy in place it is easier to get a step or two further in your international marketing, without any big language barriers. First think export marketing, then move towards international marketing as you get to know the countries and cultures more. Marc- I’m glad it resonated with you.

I'm guilty myself of exactly what you say. My sales are all online and it's true that a number come from overseas, yet I have no specific strategy in place to do anything about that. I certainly have no strategy to grow those sales. This is something that a lot of internet marketers do overlook - I think we tend to assume because the web is global that we are already 'there'. There's a bank in the UK that has some very pertinent adverts about matching your business delivery profile to the customer expectations for the locale you trade in. Understanding an international marketplace is a little like learninga foreign language, I think. Something most of us can do if we get up and actually do it! Cindy,

very thought provoking.
