In fact there are quite a few social media that I am not sold on, but some people think they each one is the best. Comments are great to bring people back. Having interaction between comments (if on topic) are great too. Remember that comments on your blog deserve a reply. When people see that you reply they often come back just to see the answer. Be specific and print what the reader wants is important. A blog on a topic of your choice will go nowhere if there are no readers interested. It's like opening a store that sells pork in a Muslim neighborhood - only provide what you know the readers will read. Only once people like your subject will they sign up for your RSS feed. When I look at other blogs and see everything in all over the place, I tend to just move on. If music is playing in the background, I will move on. Presentation is everything. If you change the site to make it easier, yes. If you change to make it pretty, no. People can Google Keywords and find your content. They can't Google clean, clear and functional site.
